Here are a few safety and maintenance suggestions.
1. Laundry vents should be cleaned at least once a year. Buildup of lint is a fire hazard.
2. Check your plumbing (toilet, sinks, laundry room, etc) water shut-off valves If they are rusted, they need to be changed to avoid breaking and leaks. If you do have a leak, know where to shut off your water to your condo (typically located in the water heater closet)
3. Check your toilet bolts, both inside and outside of the toilet. If they are rusted, they need to be changed to avoid breaking and leaks.
4. Be aware of your sprinkler heads when you are moving tall items. Do not hang anything on your sprinkler heads. If they break and spray water, you may have to call and wait for the fire department to turn off the water.
5. Maintain and service your water heater and heating/cooling system when needed. Inspect the bolts and connections for rust.
6. Your HVAC blower unit (typically located in the same closet as the water heater) may have a moisture drain pipe. It can become clogged with algae, blocking the normal drainage process, and causing your HVAC to stop functioning. Check with your HVAC provider on this topic. Some units require flushing the drain pipe periodically with fluid (like white vinegar or chlorine) to prevent algae buildup. This is potentially important for units that are vacant for long periods of time.
6. When renovating, use caution and be aware of plumbing pipes. They can easily be bumped or broken during renovation. Always shut off water to your condo while working with plumbing.
